Ten million children orphaned by AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. There are 25 million people living with HIV there and in the last year over 2 million people died due to AIDS. The disease is devastating the continent.
Five billion euros a year would help provide the anti retroviral drugs and the healthcare systems to deliver them to keep HIV positive Africans alive.
That money could easily and fairly be found by cutting back the subsidies given to Europe's richest farmers. A quarter of the Common Agricultural Policy, over €10 billion, goes to Europe's richest farmers, who each get at least 50,000 euros a year.
It is hard to justify well-off farmers and agri-businesses getting such large hand-outs when half of their subsidies could help keep millions of people alive. All we are suggesting is that the richest farmers should have their hand-outs cut back. 98% of EU farmers - many of whom do need support - will not have any subsidy removed under this initiative.
The EU Treaty on the Constitution says a million signatures can trigger the EU Commission into action. The sooner we start, the sooner we can get action.

‘We the undersigned call on the EU Commission to make a proposal to provide an extra €5 billion a year for people living with AIDS in Africa, to be found by cutting the subsidy paid to Europe's richest farmers.'
